Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has purchased over twenty Enthermics ivNow® fluid warmers from Central Medical Supplies (CMS), to help boost processes in its operating theatres and treatment centres. Enthermics is a pioneering company in the patient warming arena and CMS has been the UK distributor of Enthermics® warming equipment for over twenty years.
The Enthermics ivNow® fluid warmer is a compact, modular warming system. The system is designed to heat, and maintain, intravenous and irrigation fluids to a precise safe temperature – typically up to 40°C – in under thirty minutes.
Commenting on choosing ivNow® fluid warmers, Richard Vause, Peri-operative Team Leader at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, says: “Within my department, we have three-day surgery operating theatres, along with an outpatient urology treatment centre, and since we have been using ivNow® it has significantly simplified the process of warming fluids. Using ivNow® has also cut our spending in this area.”
Richard Vause continues: “We care for around fifty patients a day and as a day surgery and endoscopy unit we need a super speedy turnaround between patients. ivNow® allows this quick turnaround with no extra preparation, as the fluid is just laid on the platform to pre-warm. The saving of approximately fifty specialised giving sets per day has resulted in a significant cost reduction. Multiply this with around sixty-five other operating theatres across the Trust and there are major financial benefits to us of using ivNow®. There are also benefits for our patients. The increased turnaround speed opens the possibility for more patients to be included on each list, which in turn would reduce waiting list times. Using ivNow®, there is also a reduced chance of overheated fluid being administered to the patient, which improves safety.”
Remarking on working with CMS, Richard says: “We have found the CMS team easy, friendly and efficient to deal with. The company has been very supportive during the transition from the old method of fluid warming we were using.”
Enthermics ivNow® fluid warmers keep fluids warm and ready to go at the point of care, without the need for dedicated consumables. Convenient and easy to use, ivNow® fluid warmers save both space and staff time. Enthermics ivNow®fluid warmers help hospital trusts improve processes and recovery time by efficiently warming patients from admission to discharge.
The digital display on the Enthermics ivNow® fluid warmer shows the actual temperature of every bag throughout the warming process. The fluid warmer records how long each bag has been warmed, in order to comply with healthcare regulations and to reduce waste. After fifteen days of continuous warming (user adjustable from 7-60 days), the unit alerts the user to remove and discard the fluid bag.
Products in the ivNow® range include ivNow-1, ivNow-2 and ivNow-3, which have capacity for one, two and three bags of fluid respectively. Individual units can be combined in any configuration and, as the units are modular, they can be added to or removed as required rather than being a fixed unit.
ivNow® can be mounted on pedestal stands, heavy duty mobile equipment pole stands and mast arms or anaesthesia trolleys. The fluid warmers can also be hung on walls using the back plate provided and additional mounting brackets. ivNow® can also accommodate a three litre bag of fluid without the need for a tilt kit.
